Ventajas: The place is beautiful, the location is great, and the staff is the best of this place. Also they have always a person who speaks english, what makes everything easier. We are just in love with this place.
Desventajas: Everything was just perfect.

Ventajas: The staff is super friendly. They used Google translate to communicate properly in English and it was working great. We are vegetarians so they prepared for us enormous vegetarian breakfast. They gave us maps, instructions and even showed us from where and what food to eat for the walks in the mountains. The rooms are like in a museum - traditional style, very clean abs authentic. We even got the kimono and teas in the room for free every day. The best place ever!

Ventajas: The staff was amazing! We told them we missed our bus and would be arriving later than expected. When we got to the bus station they were waiting for us and drove us back to the ryokan. Tea and a snack was served promptly in our room and the host explained the area and what we could do around town. Because it was late not many restaurants were still open, so they drove us to one and helped us order our dinner. The room itself was really spacious with an excellent view of the road below. Great for gazing at the mountains and people watching from our room. The onsen itself was so lovely. Very relaxing and always emacualtely clean. We were served a beautiful breakfast every morning and tea and a snack in the afternoon. Absolutely wonderful place. Cannot say enough good things about the staff. Furthermore the other people in the town were lovely too! We unfortunately can’t speak Japanese, but we still managed to have many meaningful interactions with the other restaurant and cafe owners. 100 % recommend.

Ventajas: Very warm welcome, not everybody speaks english, but a mobile phone translator was always on hand. Very nice Location, worthy to stay a few days for walking and hiking. Liked very much the wooden board at the entrance with our name to welcome us. The parking is outside the village, but a super Transfer is given.

Ventajas: It was such a great experience staying in this ryokan. Actually the experience was one of the greatest we had in a ryokan! The place is owned by the warmest family that was so sweet and caring ! It felt like our second home! The owner spoke very well English and the food was just amazing! We can highly recommend this off the beaten track place!!
Desventajas: All was perfect and authentic!

Ventajas: This is an experience as Japanese as you can get. If you come to Japan staying in a traditional Ryokan is a must and this family-run inn is so far the best lodge I had in Japan. The room is incredibly big - actually you get two rooms, one with the traditional Japanese low table and chairs (as well as a TV but I never used it) and one with the sleeping futons. Your room also has a private toilet, but no private shower - However since it has its own private Onsen you probably wouldn't have any use for a private shower anyway. The ryokan has two indoor baths, one for men, one for women. No outdoor baths but the water in the indoor baths is indeed natural hot-spring water (not surprising as the town is actually called Dorogawa Onsen). The baths (men/women) are switched every day at 9PM so you can actually try them both (Personally I strongly prefer the one at the lower floor). Tattoos are not a problem because it's a small Ryokan and in most cases you'll be the only one there anyway. The staff are incredibly friendly and will even offer you green tea in your room. They really make you feel as if you're family. Actually this is true for the entire town, which is small enough for everyone to know each other and virtually every business is family-run (even the restaurants are actually in the 1st floor of the building the owners live in). Location wise, the Dorogowa Onsen town is the base-camp for climbing mount Omine, a beautiful 1720m tall mountain with a sacred Buddhist temple at the very top, which is not well-known to tourists, making it a great hike. This is a whole-day hike (3 hours each way) and considering where the town is (see the cons section) you will need to book two nights. The town also has a relatively big Shinto shrine and for me it was nice to see how an authentic non-tourist-contaminated Shrine looks.
Desventajas: First of all there's the location - Dorogowa Onsen is a very small town, so don't expect anything thrilling. Other than Ryokans there are two (family-owned) restaurants (which I find incredibly good) but that's about it. You will mostly spend the evening in the bath, your room or if you're lucky with a group of locals in one of the restaurants. A laptop could be useful (there's free WiFi, which works surprisingly well considering the location). Access to the place by public transportation is awful - you will need to take the Kintetsu line to a relatively remote station and from there take a local (expensive) bus which runs only once every two hours and only between 11AM-5PM, so you won't get there "by chance" unless you have a car. You'll only want to go there if you intend to climb mount Omine or if you intentionally want a truly authentic rural Japanese experience (preferably if you come by car). Regarding the mountain, it's one of the last temple-on-mountain places that is still more an actual temple than a tourist attraction but because of religious tradition this is the only mountain that is off-limits to women (not kidding here, women are really not allowed to ascend) so if there are ladies in your group you may want to skip that altogether (or just arrive off-season, when the temple is closed and you're unlikely to encounter any monk or pilgrim. Beginning of April is a good choice because most of the snow already melts and I've only encountered 5 other people on the mountain - all hikers. If you do that then strictly adhere to a don't ask don't tell discipline as far as the locals are concerned). Also, about town, and this is not really a con but I have to share it - this town is a truly sad example of the urbanization of Japan. The town has hardly any young people, virtually everyone is over 50.

Ventajas: We stayed at Jokiin for one night, which included vegetarian breakfast and dinner. We are not vegetarians, but enjoyed both meals. Highly recommend waking up for the morning prayers, which were easily the most special part of the experience. Also recommend asking about the nighttime cemetery tour, which is led by another monastery for English-speakers. It was interesting to have a guided tour and learn more from the monk, as well as to see the cemetery and temple at night (also, besides seeing other temples or using the onsen, there’s not much to do at night after dinner!). Overall, would highly recommend Jokiin.

Desventajas: Has become a bit too commercial? No contact with the chief monk at the morning service. Not even a sign of recognition of our presence in the room.

Ventajas: Amazing food. Amazing experience. We were upgraded because they weren’t busy which was an extra bonus. I was worried this could be a tourist trap and a bit sceptical as felt it was a bit expensive but the room was beautiful and the upgraded room had a private hot tub and bathroom which was luxurious. We discovered the heated floor mats in the morning which would be amazing on a cool day. The dinner and breakfast were beautiful and service was friendly. Overall we had a wonderful time visiting Koyasan and staying in Sojiin.

Desventajas: Nada
9,5 Excelente
Ventajas: Very unique experience. Great food. Perfectly placed and easy to reach. The staff is very nice and helpful.
Desventajas: Beds are not super comfortable, but they are the traditional ones. It is a tad expensive, but not more than other temples in the area.
9,3 Excelente
Ventajas: I LOVED my time at Kumagaiji. The facilities were incredibly modern and clean, and a quick dip in the public bath after dinner was very refreshing. All the monks and staff were helpful and polite. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic. And the temple is very close to the cemetery, so it's convenient if you're doing the night time tour. Thank you very much!
Desventajas: My only complaint was that the futon was maybe a little too thin, but that is of course personal preference.
9,3 Excelente
Ventajas: A couple days before arriving we received a very useful message with tips regarding how to get there etc. The welcome process is perfect, they explain the mountain, the activities... It’s great. And, surprisingly, they speak the best English you’ll hear in Japan. The Head Monk is nice and funny and all the other monks are sweet, nice and helpful.
Desventajas: The “beds” are too thin and we didn’t sleep very well. It’s a temple though, not a hotel!
8,3 Excelente
Ventajas: I loved the chief monk and his sense of humor, the peace and non- commercial atmosphere compared to the temple next door. The garden and surroundings were beautiful and zen. Great vegan dinner!! The morning ceremony, especially the fire ceremony was awesome. The location was perfect.
Desventajas: They could also refresh the wall paper in the rooms since they renovated the bathrooms and other shared facilities. But overall good stay and I will definitely go back there soon( I’m a tour guide in Japan).
9,5 Excelente
Ventajas: Exactly what I was hoping and expecting from one of these temple stays, based on my research. I was satisfied with what I got for the price. There were really good explanations and guidance available at all points, and the ceremonies I witnessed were great, as was the food. It's conveniently located for the Okunoin night tour.
8,3 Excelente
9,5 Excelente
Ventajas: Stay in Kumagaiji was probably the most memorable stay of our whole Japan trip. We travelled with two kids, and were worried a bit how will it work for us with early stay and traditional rooms/sleep, but our kids loved it! Most powerful experience of our stay, defenitely. Since there is a lot of lodge temples one could choose from, it was a difficult choice. Our reason to choose Kumagaiji is because it looked as it could be less crowded, less 'western' and more traditional than others, and a bit on the outskirts of Koyasan. And it was - we really loved our stay and would love to come again. A big thank you to our hosts for letting us get a glympse of their life.
Desventajas: -
9,5 Excelente
9,3 Excelente
Ventajas: Monks are very kind and helpful and, generally, they speak a good English. Dinner and breakfast, even if vegans, have a good flavor and a great quality, a monk explained us how, each dish, was made and which was the ingredients. There is a wide onsen inside the temple. The temple is just a few steps away the Eko-in temple, that organizes the nocturnal visit at the Okuno-in cemetery, so you can get out at the last moment to join to the rest of the participants (if you want to make this experience, and I recommend you to do that, I suggest you to book it, in advance, by web because there is a discount). Rooms are plain but clean, cozy and comfortable (sadly our rooms looked out at the street and not at the internal garden). The morning and fire ceremonies are unmissable (even if a bit touristy).
Desventajas: Pillows were too hard, for me was not an issue but, for someone, it might be.
8,8 Excelente
Ventajas: Great location, amazing experience with the morning fire ceremony
10,0 Excelente

Ventajas: The fireplace was very homey, comfortable and quiet. It’s a really relaxing place and we loved this space! This is such a great idea :) The staff were really trying their best to accommodate us, especially pedro. So thank you to him for all his efforts despite the language barrier. We really appreciate it!
Desventajas: The lobby area is quite depressing...and norah jones songs didnt help make it less sad and dry. I think instrumental music would be much better, relaxing and neutral. It feels weird hearing western music in a japanese “ryokan” and it makes it feel more inauthentic. Our room was ok, it had everything we need! Although in terms of how i felt staying there, it’s not really great...maybe it’s the design or the lighting or the view (of the nextdoor building’s wall) from our window...it just felt old and sad. i could imagine the wooden log rooms (after seeing the fireplace) must be nicer and maybe more welcoming/happier. Overall, it was a convenient stay but i just expected something more alive.

Ventajas: Very spacious room, two lovely onsen, absolutely exquisite food which included a wide variety of Japanese specialities (sashimi, tempura, Kobe beef etc), convenient location near the top of the cable car. The whole place was very stylish - traditional design with modern twists.
Desventajas: The pillows were a traditional style a bit like a bean bag, which we found a bit hard!

Ventajas: The breakfast (with a Western or Japanese option) was amazing. The onsite onsen was small but served the purpose wonderfully after hill walking.

Ventajas: Very impressive dinner, which was a traditional japanese dinner (which we really wanted to try out). Beautiful landscape around and many areas to explore. Unique, old shops in 1-5 min walking time, with humble storeowners and interesting handcrafted artifacts you can buy. Also, the personell was really good at showing us the area within the ryokan; for instance dinner area and other facilities. The onsen, or bathing area, was a truly unique experience.
Desventajas: We did not like walking with luggage all the way up the mountain. We should have called them and asked for a car or bus. Our fault

Ventajas: It was amazing! The food was fantastic and they did everything they could to accommodate us. I'd recommend staying for two nights. We stayed for one and the visit went by so fast that it was hard to see everything in the time we had. The onsen in the temple was great after a hot sticky evening of walking around.
Desventajas: Everything with the property was great. The booking website was a little confusing, we messed up and booked one room for one person and didn't realize you have to pay per person even though you're in the same room. We had to scramble a little when we got there, but thankfully they were able to accommodate. Just pay extra close attention if you book online!

Ventajas: I enjoyed the peaceful surroundings, building architecture, interior design, hospitality, and traditional Japanese amenities.
Desventajas: The 9:00 AM curfew, but understand why it is a rule.

Ventajas: Modern facilities, spacious traditional Japanese bedroom with green tea and cake on arrival, Yukata robe provided. Beautiful grounds and garden although you could only view this from indoors, lovely temple for morning prayers and good central location close to bus sto
Desventajas: It was a little pricey but I think most of the temple accommodation in the area is expensive. You could only shower in the public onsen but again I think this is typical of the Japanese Ryokan properties. Check out was very early at 9am

Ventajas: Austere / in a good way: felt authentic, including meals, which were very good.
Desventajas: Curfew very restrictive (seemed another popular property’s curfew was 1 or 2 hours later).

Ventajas: At arrival they had made tea in our room, that was very nice. During dinner they make your futon beds. Also they explain everything like the time dinner and breakfast is served, opening hours of the onsen and how to use the equipment in your room. The staff is very friendly, they gave us umbrella's because of the rainy weather. Overall a great experience.

Ventajas: If you're looking for a Shukobu (temple lodging) this is one of many on Koya. I highly recommend to assist the morning prayers (even though they start at 06.30), and immediately after, your breakfast is served. In the evening dinner is great. The premises are very quiet, curfew at 09 p.m. Staff is very friendly, English or any other language may be a bit of an obstacle, but if you make a little effort ... you'll have a great stay

Ventajas: Everything. The Onsen, the place over the mountains, the food, but beyond anything else, the people who work at the hotel, they were so kind!
Desventajas: Nothing to complain.

Ventajas: Everything was excellent: the attentive friendly staff, the beautiful rooms with lovely views, the Onsen etc. But the highlight was the food: superb banquets of delicious food with great presentation and service. I’d give it more than 10/10. A truly memorable experience.
Desventajas: No complaints. We found our single futons a bit thin, so they happily added a layer.

Ventajas: Amazing location, service and breakfast. We arrived 4 hours late by bicycle, wet and dirty (bad luck with weather), but they welcomed us to the nice, clean entrance, which we were afraid of soiling, and offered us Kuzumochi (local sweet) with hot Japanese tea nonetheless. Used the public bath outdoor late in the evening, and made some lasting memories.

Ventajas: As mentioned by others, what makes this hotel are the staff. They are second to none. The hotel location is quite secluded but well worth the effort to get to. Trains run very regularly to Yoshino Station from Osaka or Nara if you don’t have a car, so access is still quite easy. Once arriving at the station, we asked the station staff for help and they called the hotel who sent a car to pick us up in less than 15 mins. The walk up the hill with luggage is not recommended. They also arranged a booking, and drove us to, a local restaurant for dinner as we arrived a little late. The area around the hotel is great for walking and visiting the temples. The hotels Onsen is also an experience. The highlight of the hotel is the food though. Breakfast and dinner are something to remember.
Desventajas: The hotel is a little dated and bathrooms could use a renovation, but this is easy to overlook considering the staff and by using the Onsen. Yes wifi is not the best, but considering where you are, this is the last thing to worry about.

Ventajas: Close to chikurin temple in naka senbon part of Mt Yoshino. Spectacular unobstructed view of the whole Naka Senbon (middle 1000 trees) part of Mt Yoshino... sakuras were just starting / in partial bloom when we were there last week of March. Staff were friendly and ver polite although they didn’t speak much English. The most beautiful part was their open air ’rotenburo’ onsen baths: they had a good shower area and indoor onsen tub, but also a few natural rock pools outdoors, which switches each day so you can try out both if you stay at least 1 night. The extra special treat was a few cherry blossom trees in full bloom literally overhung the rotenburo, with petals falling into the pool as I relaxed in the mild spring weather. Simply magical!! Also a super delicious Japanese breakfast was included in the room rate which I got on special on booking.com for ¥20,000 for 2 people - had grilled fish, tsukemono- pickled veggies, other side dishes etc. welcome tea and sweets served upon check in was a nice touch too.
Desventajas: - Walk up a steep slope/ flight of stairs from the last public shuttle bus stop (¥360 one way) that takes you from the Yoshino Station as no free shuttle service offered by hotel. Would’ve otherwise taken ~40 mins walk from/to Yoshino Station to hotel. - no wifi in room, only very slow wifi in common areas - not much options to eat dinner as most places close by 5pm but hotel at least told us to go to “Shizuka-tei” down the slope 5 mins away for affordable teishyoku (udon, rice etc), which was pretty good, instead it would’ve been ¥6,000 pp for dinner offered by this ryokan which we thought was a bit steep.

Ventajas: Damn Daniel, We recently stayed at your shrine “accommodation”. Though the surrounding area is beautiful, sleeping is quite a challenge. Our bedroom was overrun with gigantic spiders, perhaps the largest I’ve ever seen. At first, I thought I had a warped view of reality, but after an hour-long battle, punctuated with the clattering of books and whipping of towels, I managed to kill it before it killed me. It’s a dog eat dog world and I do hope you forgive me for the brain splatter on the floor. Before drifting off, I noticed a concerning sign which said our radiator may spontaneously leak gas if touched. Later, I awoke from my sweaty 4 hour slumber to find there had been a power outage and the fan had died. There were numerous signs warning us of angry staff who were bald, but strictly not monks. These bald men were elusive and clever, and resulted in our justified paranoia. A small child, perhaps 1/3rd the size of me, taught us one evening how to unlock every room door by reaching our hand through the large gaps and unlocking it from the inside. He was scarily clever for his size and age. A warm abode for arachnids, thieves, and rude bald people.

Desventajas: No es un templo budista real. Está adaptado para que los turistas vayan

Ventajas: It’s a very well situated temple next to the Okunoin cemetery, it’s quiet and the food is good.
Desventajas: It felt too much like a business. For example the 30mn mornings ceremony over, we were pushed to breakfast. I understand that it is annoying to have tourists in your temple all the time and they probably need the tourism money to preserve the space, but it was a bit disappointing

Desventajas: Everything is fine except I booked my room with private bathroom, unfortunately it was out of service and I had to go to public bathroom.

Ventajas: One of the highlights of my whole travel. The food, the friendliness of the staff, the morning prayer, the solitude of the area. Absolutely wonderful! Plus, walking distance (5 min) from the town center and bus stop.
5,8 Bueno
Ventajas: I liked the spaciousness of the room, the view of the garden and the modern private bathroom with toilet and sink (no private shower/bath). I enjoyed taking a hot bath after I arrived (simple gender-separated public indoor bath). I also really enjoyed the plant based meals and seeing the young monks-in-training walk around. The monks that served the food in the dining hall were friendly and one explained the dishes that were served to me.
Desventajas: There was a lack of information on booking.com about what to expect. I thought the food would be served in my room as I had seen in an online video and read in another review, but it was served in a dining hall. The morning ritual was really short, not even half an hour, and I haven't seen any fire ritual. There were pieces of wood on which you could write your wishes that would then be burned in such fire ritual, but you had to pay 1000 yen per piece, it was not included in the accomodation fee. The monk that checked me in didn't seem too friendly. He gave me the feeling that he didn't actually like "those tourists". The room in traditional style and guesthouse in general felt like it hadn't seen an upgrade in decades, I felt like I was thrown back to the 80s. Things felt worn. This excludes the private bathroom/toilet, which looked like it had recently been renovated. All the temple buildings on the property looked like they could use a bit of paint, and the gardens didn't look too well-kept to me either. I definitely expected a bit more after paying 16,000 yen to have a temple stay experience.
7,0 Muy bueno
Ventajas: If you're visiting Koya-san, this type of accommodation is an absolute must. The buddhist-style breakfasts and dinners are a cultural experience unto themselves. Make sure to check out the morning meditation. The temple itself is beautiful and features one of the oldest stupas on the mountain.
Desventajas: The value simply doesn't match the price of the accommodation -- you pay way too much compared to other locations on the mountain. It's certainly cool, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't help but feel that I had gotten ripped off.
8,0 Excelente
Ventajas: One of my most memorable experiences during my time in Japan. The morning prayers were fascinating and the shojin ryori was excellent.
Desventajas: I'm not sure why the check-in staff needed to be so brusque. This is a temple rather than a hotel, but given what guests pay for the experience it would be nice to be welcomed, at least.
6,8 Muy bueno
Ventajas: I liked the experience of staying in traditional temple housing as well as experiencing the meal for breakfast and dinner. The morning temple prayer was great and peaceful loved it.
Desventajas: The staff was received us upon arrival was not very friendly and seemed more surprised that we arrived than happy. Based on photos online I also thought there would have been more of a garden on site for us to walk around. Not much to do there besides the morning prayer.
5,8 Bueno
Ventajas: We were staying 2 nights and couldn't stomach the thought of eating the dinner and breakfast twice. We asked, and they knocked off almost $40 in lieu of our not "enjoying" a second dinner and breakfast. The room was okay, but not any better than J-hoppers at Yunomine Onsen that cost about $80 per night (no meals). There was no soap.in our bathroom.
Desventajas: This place is horrible value. There must be price-fixing occurring in Koyasan because, from talking to other travellers, it sounds as though all the temple accommodations are bad. There was no kettle. We were given a thermos full of hot water with no way to top.it up. No coffee. There's no lock on the outside of the door so you have to carry your valuables with you all the time (not that there's likely to be a problem). Both nights we stayed here we were woken around 12.30 am by some guy talking. The pillows are tiny. The food was, to put it kindly, very subtly flavored. These Buddhists are to tofu what Heinz is to beans, 57 varieties, all of which are bland. My wife and I love vegetarian curries. Maybe spices impede meditation? As bad as the dinner was, breakfast was even worse. Breakfast was awful.

Ventajas: Location great, charming village. Nice traditional home.
Desventajas: everything was fine....except it was COLD!!! We were there beginning of April and I imagine we had an unusually cold spell, as it was actually snowing. Like many Japanese houses, there is basically zero insulation. They heated with smelly kerosene heaters (which also seem unsafe to me, as the fumes just stay in your room...but I am not an expert on such matters). It was literally 45 degrees F (7 Celsius) in our room when we woke up. So this place is fine for budget accommodation in the summer...but not recommended in winter or during cold weather.

Ventajas: The room was beautiful and spacious, Japanese style and there were Japanese cookies and green tea in our room. Also boiled water was being prepared. We could wear a yukata and Japanese shoes and go outside wearing them. We also could order meals so we had breakfast there. The meal was very Japanese as well and they prepared it in a private room. It didnt have an air conditioner but it wasnt hot at all. Also it had small public baths, which were nice. Also they gave us chopsticks as a present. It was generally a good experience. Highly recommended!
Desventajas: It was very noisy in the morning. Basically the doors and windows cant block noise at all. Also, it doesnt have a map written in English. And there is no bathroom in the room.

Ventajas: Saratoku Ryokan has a beautiful interior and the rooms were very well-equipped as well. Love the overall feel of a traditional Japanese inn which makes one feel at home. The ryokan offers housekeeping services and biscuits that were provided in the room were replenished daily as well. The owner was a pleasant guy and even though we had trouble communicating due to language barriers, he always did his best to help us understand and answer our questions.
Desventajas: It was stating on our confirmation that the room we booked has garden views, but the room given to us was one right beside the street without any garden in sight. Also, travelers should note that usage of the bathing area requires an additional charge of 100Yen per pax per night, which we were not previously informed of as well. The charge is small but it'd be nice if we were informed beforehand so we can set aside the right amount of money for payment.
