Thrown a curve ball picking up the car
Ventajas: Great car at market price.
Desventajas: Didn't like the hard sell for insurance coverage at 100 and 200% of the rental reservation. When declined they forced a $3,000. Credit deposit and a contract to cover replacement of the vehicle.
Was open that the trip included visits to othe EU countries. After all else was done the agent stamped the rental document in red, "no crossing borders."
Ventajas: Notting
Desventajas: Had to wait a huge que and learned that 7€ price is a way to rip of customers. They told me no insurance and if I pay 39€ they still had to block 2000€ From my Card.
I ended up paying 45€ .
Unacceptable
Ventajas: Receiving agent looked at sheet with lots of scratches n dings noted when picked up n said he'd treat us "professionally" n believe no new damage. We didn't need to argue n show pictures of car when we picked it up in Porto. Wonderful.
Ventajas: Everything worked as expected, car was great. Staff was very helpful.
Desventajas: Office was a little understaffed during pickup, but was fine at all other times.

We ordered a GPS device. It was provided at a ridiculous price and simply handed to us without any directions or instruction manual. I've never used one and it was not very intuitive. It also didn't work multiple times during our trip.

Ventajas: There was a 2+ hour line to pick-up my pre-booked car. Unacceptable. I ended up going to Hertz.
Ventajas: I waited 2 hours at the counter waiting for my turn to process my previously made reservation and pick up my car until I finally could not wait any longer (hungry, thirsty, and tired after a long flight) and had to call a relative to pick me up at the airport.
Desventajas: More staff, better customer service, at least a waiting lounge with snacks and water. Or get out of the business and do something else.
Ventajas: Staff was great. Difficult to find drop off, as the GPS sent me to a different place. After going around in a circle twice, finally just drove to the terminal and looked for a "rental car" sign. Suggest that all rented GPS have the proper drop off point in the future.
Desventajas: The van advertised said it was big enough for 7 people and their luggage. The van at pickup was fine to seat 7 people, but had almost zero room for luggage. Had to go up a class, and it was nearly twice the price. Wish I had know this upfront.

Misleading car class
Ventajas: Car was nice. Just not what I reserved.
Desventajas: The car I reserved was a BMW 745 or comparable. The car we received was a Fiat Tipo. Obviously these cars are in very different categories and this was blatant misadvertising. I will not rent through you guys again and we share my negative experience with my colleagues.

Worst car rental experience ever
Ventajas: Nothing
Desventajas: Individual who processed my car return was curt and rude. No one was around when we arrived so I chose a lane for the car and parked. As we were about to unload an attendant ran up and said we had to move over.
The area was incredibly cramped and small as is, and I had barely enough clearance to move the car into the lane he wanted me to be in. So I started moving the car carefully, and even though I had enough clearance on either side, he started yelling at me about how to move the car and seemed frustrated that I wasn’t moving more quickly. Since he clearly had strong opinions on my driving skills, I asked if he could move the car instead. He said "No" at first and continued yelling at me for how to maneuver the car. He only obliged after I stopped moving the car, and even so, he continued barking orders at me like unlocking the car more quickly and even criticized HOW I unlocked the car (I used the door handle and he scoffed saying I should push the "unlock" button instead)
Mind you there wasn't a mad rush or anything...no one else was there...things weren't crazy and he was just overwhelmed with work. Absolutely NO excuse for his behavior

Desventajas: The facilities (underground) were dark and cramped, did not rise to the level of the staff

Desventajas: Upon return, they will try to find damage and charge you hundreds of euros
Ventajas: Received a hybrid car, which made fueling up in the midst of tanker driver strikes less difficult
Desventajas: We waited almost three hours to get the car, making us late for our check-in at our destination.
Desventajas: Waiting close to three hours to get a car is too long of a time to wait. All the other car rental agency’s had 1/5 of the line that budget had/Avis had
Ventajas: Pleasant and helpful staff on both ends
Ventajas: Collection had a ridiculous delay. A long queue that should have moved much more quickly. Each person was at the desk and twiddling their thumbs while the Budget reps spent ages on the computer. The problem must be in the computer system as each step seemed to take ages.
Desventajas: BEWARE, we waited for almost 3 hours to pick up our rental car!!!!!!!! A complete waste of time! I WILL NEVER RENT A CAR FROM BUDGET EVER AGAIN.

Ventajas: Good vehicle. 7 seats but just big enough for 6 with one bage each.
Desventajas: GPS was 18 euro per day and did not work well.
Confused
Ventajas: Final car of 3 which was OK.
Desventajas: Given wrong key to car #1, upgraded to car #2.
Car #2 had low tire pressure indication, upgraded to car #3, which was OK.
In each step of the process(which took better part of an hour), I had to go to a different department and to wait in another line.
Good car, easy experience
Ventajas: Quick and easy to collect the car. Good diesel KIA in excellent shape. Friendly and efficient staff. Central location.
Desventajas: They still add a fuel fill up cost to start, a subtle incentive to let them refill at drop off. It's a bad deal unless the tank is almost empty. No problem removing that fee, however, once I returned the car full.
Expect to wait a LONG time when picking up your vehicle
Ventajas: Car was fine but had minor damage that I needed to identify before I left in order to avoid being charged upon return. These included a damaged side mirror and small body dent, both of which were noted on my contract (be sure to inspect your car carefully!). Also, be sure you're really proficient at using a manual transmission, which is the default even for higher end cars, as many of the streets in the older parts of Lisbon involve twisting, hilly, single-lane cobblestone roads. I happen to have always driven a manual transmission so it was a non-issue for me. If you're unsure about your proficiency with a manual, pay extra to get an automatic. It's a lot cheaper than rolling backwards into the car behind you on a steep hill and having to deal with insurance, etc..
One more suggestion - be sure to have Google maps (or something similar) available for navigation! If you don't want to incur cell charges you can 'download offline maps' in Google maps which allows you to use navigation without an internet or cellular connection (the GPS chip in your phone does not require either - you just have to have the local maps downloaded to your device). Be sure to download maps for the entire area you plan to drive in (you can define the boundaries graphically when downloading offline maps).

I heard from others who rented cars in Lisbon that this is typical for all companies - not just Budget - so plan accordingly.

Ventajas: Good new car and very clean

Desventajas: We were very disappointed that some crucial information is not shared with the customers. We were not informed that every kilometre has an additional fee. We were renting a car just for one day and the overall price ended up being twice as much from what was promised on the day we picked up the car.

Desventajas: The staff seemed annoyed when asked to assist on driving the car from its parked location in the garage which seems obstructed by another rental vehicle. Car was an automatic, but it was not explained that the car can also be placed in a manual mode. In the USA a car is either one or the other. Ok

Desventajas: Check in st lisbon caused me to wait for 1.5 hours. Their Office is very chaotic! The price you pay for renting a car is tremendously high. Although you have a good quote online, you pay an extremely high fare at the counter. I ended up paying 700 Euro’s instead of 170 Euro’s...

Desventajas: About 30 kilometers from Hertz office in Lisbon out Fiat 500C broke. Despite being just on the other side of Tag river we were waiting for 4 hours to have the problem solved (and car, eventually replaced).
Some employees on Hertz hotline have not spoken English at all.

Wouldn't rent another car from this place if my life depended on it
Desventajas: I'm fairly convinced this Hertz isn't a legitimate Hertz and is just stealing the logo and name. From rude attendants at the front desk, to the cars taking over an hour to be prepared, to them trying to swindle us on a _second_ insurance package, to the final price of the rental being well over double what we agreed to up front, I have never had a worse car rental experience. However, the real kicker is that they never told us what type of fuel to put in our car and had conveniently removed the car's manual from the glove box. So we asked a gas station attendant, who proceeded to fill the car with the wrong type of gasoline, and it essentially ruined the car's engine. We had to be towed (we were in the middle of nowhere and the tow truck took several hours), take a cab 30 minutes to the closest rental car company, get a new car, and in all of this wasted the last day of our trip and almost missed our flight home. And instead of being apologetic about the entire ordeal, we were treated as if it was our fault there wasn't a single marking on the car indicating what kind of gasoline it took. Of course they're also now charging us an absurd amount of money for the damages, which apparently aren't covered under the insurance policy. I'm fighting them on all of it, meaning the saga continues. But learn from my mistake and do NOT rent a car from this Hertz. Total disaster.

Desventajas: The staff seemed annoyed when asked to assist on driving the car from its parked location in the garage which seems obstructed by another rental vehicle. Car was an automatic, but it was not explained that the car can also be placed in a manual mode. In the USA a car is either one or the other. Ok

Desventajas: Both kayak and Hertz did a terrible job of communicating the address and the fact that it was a hertz location - kayak lists the correct address only when you book (not in the confirmation email), the phone number is hertz but agents didn't know about dollar. You also can't find a dollar location on Google maps or their website.
Also, location manager was very literal and not very customer oriented. When another customer asked to add scratches to the file and the agent did it, she repreended the agent for marking what the customer wanted because they were "not relevant". I wonder how the customer would be able to defend himself if they blamed him for the scratches upon returning the car...

Desventajas: FIrst of all, the actual rental company name is "Gold Car" and not ACE. We went around and around the airport looking for ACE only to find out the name was wrong. Once located, the staff was easily overwhelmed and not friendly.

Desventajas: The pick up was one of the worst rental car pick up experiences that I have ever had - it was unclear, patience-testing, and lengthy. Finding the check in was challenging, the check in process was chaotic, and it took over an hour from the time that I arrived at rentals until we had our car.
Desventajas: It’s a scam. You’ll get a car from Goldcar not Ace. Ace doesn’t exist. Goldcar will charge you twice the amount then make up a fake scratch on your return and then charge you 300 euros to fix it.

ACE Cancelled our reservation without any notification.
Desventajas: We called the local desk at the airport (they use a 3rd party, which clearly is a bad system) to let them know that we'd be a day late to get the car and they arranged to hold the reservation, but when we arrived, ACE had remotely cancelled it without an email or any kind of notification. Calling ACE customer service from the airport yielded an "oh well" response. So, we had to get a new rental directly from the other company. Thankfully THEY were able to help us.

Desventajas: The woman behind the counter charged my card, than said she didn't. , mind you I called my credit card and had someone from customer service on the phone . The " manager" refused to talk to the cc company stating how that was not his " job" .
I have email ACE four time have yet to get an email back. They over charged the card over 340 euros. And I don't even get a response from them. Instead of yapping to each other , they should pay attention to their job, and help the people that are at their counter,
Avoid like the plague
Ventajas: the cleanliness of the car
Desventajas: I booked an economy car which was showing a large 5-door sedan. At the car rental place (GoldCar) they gave me a Fiat 500, which is a 3-door car, I think one of the smallest in existence. I had to pay for an upgrade. Then, they used obnoxious scare tactics to scare me into buying the overpriced insurance, which costed more than the car. On top of that, they charged paytoll fees, and some administrative fees.
The car used petrol, which added considerably to the gas money.
Customer service was unhelpful as expected, they kept transfering the guild from the car company to the reseller and back.
All in all, it was a terrible experience, one which I'll never forget and never recommend to anyone.
Horrible value for what we got - false advertizing and hidden costs
Ventajas: The car itself was fine.
Desventajas: The ACE rental car is very hard to find because it is gold car so that took us about a half hour. More so - we were supposed to pay $58.65 and we ended up paying $186 which is a crazy jump in price. This was a very rude awakening and they blamed it on required "added insurance" and extra fees. I feel very ripped off and was very unsatisfied because of it. If I were you I would make sure people know they will be paying 3 times the price that they booked it at.
Desventajas: FIrst of all, the actual rental company name is "Gold Car" and not ACE. We went around and around the airport looking for ACE only to find out the name was wrong. Once located, the staff was easily overwhelmed and not friendly.

Desventajas: It’s a scam. You’ll get a car from Goldcar not Ace. Ace doesn’t exist. Goldcar will charge you twice the amount then make up a fake scratch on your return and then charge you 300 euros to fix it.

On initial inspection they missed a 1in scratch on the front bumper among the more than 20 blemishes, then charged me 200 Euros for the scratch. I had photos of the scratch and will be appealing.
Terrible time waste on pickup and return.

ACE Cancelled our reservation without any notification.
Desventajas: We called the local desk at the airport (they use a 3rd party, which clearly is a bad system) to let them know that we'd be a day late to get the car and they arranged to hold the reservation, but when we arrived, ACE had remotely cancelled it without an email or any kind of notification. Calling ACE customer service from the airport yielded an "oh well" response. So, we had to get a new rental directly from the other company. Thankfully THEY were able to help us.
Worse customer service ever.

Desventajas: The woman behind the counter charged my card, than said she didn't. , mind you I called my credit card and had someone from customer service on the phone . The " manager" refused to talk to the cc company stating how that was not his " job" .
I have email ACE four time have yet to get an email back. They over charged the card over 340 euros. And I don't even get a response from them. Instead of yapping to each other , they should pay attention to their job, and help the people that are at their counter,

Ventajas: the cleanliness of the car
Desventajas: I booked an economy car which was showing a large 5-door sedan. At the car rental place (GoldCar) they gave me a Fiat 500, which is a 3-door car, I think one of the smallest in existence. I had to pay for an upgrade. Then, they used obnoxious scare tactics to scare me into buying the overpriced insurance, which costed more than the car. On top of that, they charged paytoll fees, and some administrative fees.
The car used petrol, which added considerably to the gas money.
Customer service was unhelpful as expected, they kept transfering the guild from the car company to the reseller and back.
All in all, it was a terrible experience, one which I'll never forget and never recommend to anyone.

Renting a car during a summer road trip
Ventajas: Friendly staff, online rate, car options , unlimited mileage
Desventajas: I chose my car online and I know what I want , I don't want to have to go through upsell tactics at the counter. The policy also does not specify that it's mandatory to have a passport, but on arrival the counter insisted on passport, so I had to take a cab all the way to the hotel and get it. Drop off should be quick , but the checkin and checkout counters are operated by the same attendants so we had to wait a while for out turn to come.
