Worst Car Rental Company in BostonDesventajas: I was given a broken car. Customer service was rude. I was charged $350 dollars on my credit card two weeks after I returned my rental. When I called customer service told me it was "administration fees" for MA tolls. I explained to them that I had used my own EZ pass for the tolls and that there must have been an issue with it but they were completely rude and refused to remove the charge. I rent cars from Logan Airport every month. I will never use this company again.

Stranded in BostonVentajas: With inclement weather, our flight to Portland got cancelled. At 2 in the morning, we were able to book a rental through Alamo and made it home in record time. I returned the car the first thing the next day, even though the rental had another full day. Alamo prorated the rental cost and refunded me the difference. They made our bad circumstances in travel so much better. Desventajas: Friendly staff and such an easy and fast rental process.

Check engine night light Desventajas: The check engine light cane of 30 minutes after we left, the van, the windshield wipers did not work (which is extremely hazardous in the cold), there was an incessant rattling in the trunk, although there was nothing in it, and the tire pressure light would come on and off at hourly intervals. Overall, it was a very disatisfying experience. I am 6 months pregnant, and we had theee elderly people family members with us. Needless to say we did not feel safe I. The car that we spent a fair amount of money to rent. My husbands family is in VT and we travel there and rent cars at least 4 times a year, this is the worst experience we’ve ever had.

A little unclear on the conceptVentajas: For a mid-size car, it got great mileage. Desventajas: Pick up at the airport in Boston was like being in a non-English-speaking country. Signage was nearly nonexistent, the shuttle bus was slower than a tour bus in tar, and we were checked by someone at a competitor’s counter (though, to be fair, the competitor owns the brand we rented). Drop off was in a downtown location that Google Maps couldn’t find, and it was on the 7th level of a parking structure that was being refurbished where cars were sent on routes that said Do Not Enter. If it’s supposed to be more convenient to get around by car (we were headed to Cape Cod), Alamo didn’t get the memo and is a little unclear on the meaning of “convenient.”
Confusing drop-offVentajas: We just pulled up and walked away - getting us to our flight earlier. Desventajas: The signage to get into the garage was confusing. The agents were not helpful in helping us to understand where we were supposed to go.

Smoking Kills (Good Reviews)Ventajas: The person with whom I checked in was very accommodating and helpful. Also the person who got the manager for me upon my return (he worked for Budget) was very polite and accommodating. Desventajas: I arrived at Logan Airport and had to get to an interview for a position at a nearby school. When I got to my car the windows were down and the car smelled like smoke, but I didn't have the time to trade the car out and figured it was just me and there was no way they would give me a car like that. By the time I got to my interview my skin, hair and clothes were permeated with the smell of cigarette smoke, which was extremely embarrassing for me as a candidate for a high-school teaching position. When I brought this to the attention of the manager upon returning the car, she offered me $50 back, which doesn't even come close to covering my dry cleaning costs much less the embarrassment I suffered. When I asked her if she thought this was fair, she just looked at me like I was an idiot, so I said "ok do what you think is fair and if I have a problem with it, I'll take it up with customer service and/or write a review recapping the situation."
Very unsatisfactory.Ventajas: Great car and very nice staff.Desventajas: My car smelled so badly of a man's body odor, I had to drive with the windows down in -15 degree winter weather. Also, there was no windshield washer fluid, causing me to have to stop approx. 60 times in very dangerous weather to poor water on my windshield. I also had to incur purchasing that water, and finally, windshield washer fluid, when I arrived to a place that sold it.
Then after all of this, I called to get assistance, and all they could offer was $50, which wasn't much considering the additional money I had to spend on gas, (stopping so many times for safety, because I couldn't see out the window, caused me to be over an hour late for a lunch I have planned and prevented me from seeing my loved one who I only see once/year). Also, when I called customer service, I was forced to tell my story 4x before someone could help me.
And then after ALL of this, my invoice came in my email with actual mathematical errors on it, charging me more than the receipt I was given at the Budget office.
Overall, this was a very very poor experience, and one I've never had even once after dozens of rentals with Enterprise. Very disappointing all around.
PICK UP POORDesventajas: Windshield fluid would not work below 32 degrees. Most of trip was below freezing. Try using windshield fluid. Bar code scan at pick up was not from the car that I rented. Took awhile to straighten out at drop off standing in 11 degree weather.

I had explicitly asked when I picked up the car if they would be open and shuttle running at that day and time and I was told yes. I had to pay for a Lyft and was almost late to my flight. I always try to book using my loyalty credentials to avoid the line, but this was a last minute reservation by phone app and I didn't have an account set up with Budget. So I had to wait.

There we found the car and left. Usually there is someone around to point you in the right direction or at least tell you a little bit about the car. The return was confusing since the sign where we parked said to return the keys to the office , but by the elevator there was a box that said to leave the keys there.

Second car I transferred all my belongings to did not have keys in it and the staff wouldn't come help figure out the problem. Third car did have keys in it, but no windshield wiper fluid. Checkout booth man said maybe the mechanics are lazy; he didn't attribute it to the 6 degree temperature or frozen plugs.... unsolved mystery. Pickup bus at Logan took a while to get to me us to every terminal and made the whole rental process extremely slow start (30 minutes )
No car for usDesventajas: We arrived at 11pm on Christmas night. Dollar did not have a car for us though we’d had a reservation for 2 months and provided our flight number. We did arrive 1.5 hours later than expected, but as I stated they had our flight number and were aware of the delay. Instead of helping us secure another car they just said “too bad, sorry”. We found our own with another company, but had to pay significantly more. Not a good way to end the holiday or start a vacation.

Should be called "Dollar and Dime You"Ventajas: The people who work for the company are quite nice, from the front desk CSRs to the lady who showed me my car to the guys who logged the car back into the system -- major props to the employees.Desventajas: Dollar charges tons of hidden fees. The price quotes by Kayak was not the price I had to pay at Dollar. They require the name of your auto insurance company (none of your business, Dollar). They charge you $12/day (additional) for an EZ Pass transponder, which in Mass, is required now that we've gone to automatic tolling. If you don't take the EZ Pass transponder the company charges you a processing fee of $18 PER TOLL -- let me say that again -- $18 PER TOLL. There are fees for adding additional drivers. My "great deal!" on Kayak became a woefully overpriced economy car for a day. I will never again rent from this company.
Desventajas: My final bill included $97.47 in miscellaneous charges, i.e.: "Concession fee recovery, vehicle licensing cost recovery, Customer Facility Charge + Tax, ParkTicket SCHG + Tax/Convention Ctr Surcharge, Energy Surcharge, and Tax". (I had no parking tickets and did not go anywhere near the Convention Center.) Add to that "toll charges" of $47.96 (actually a charge for renting a transponder, my tolls could not have exceeded $10). I opted for "loss damage waiver" (exorbitant at $28.49 per day, $113.96 total). All of the foregoing raised the "total amount" of my four-day booking as quoted in my reservation ($177.38) to $371.03. On top of that, I reserved an intermediate sized car and got a Mazda 3 -- not a bad car but not my idea of intermediate -- with no rate reduction.
TerribleVentajas: I had a flight change which delayed pickup. When I notified Dollar, they wanted to raise my rate from $325 to $800. Put me in a very difficult position.
Small car in the snowVentajas: The car was clean and though small fit what we needed.Desventajas: The tiny size of the car and it’s two wheel drive did not make navigation in the snow easy. It would be nice if they considered the climate they’re renting in. Drop off was also not clear or easy as it was after hours and there was no clear signage.
EZ-pass is a ripoff - I was forced to get it, and forced to pay $35 Ventajas: The car itself worked fine, even in a light snow. It was clean and in good repair. Desventajas: The clerks didn't even register my presence at the counter until I forced them to pay attention to me, and then the person who reluctantly helped me with the car spoke in a nearly inaudible monotone that made it very difficult to understand things like the gas options, the EZ-pass, and where to find the car in the garage.

Desventajas: we dropped off our car at the airport and recognized within 10 minutes that we had left a camera in the car. We could not track down customer service, rental car drop off, or the manager on duty while we were at the airport, nobody would answer a phone or give us a call back. Central reservations and troubleshooting could not track down anybody for us to retrieve our item. We had to file a lost item report and it took two days for them to get back to us, and at that time it was simply an email. Never were able to get hold of a single live person to address our issue.

The woman who was picking out the truck with me wasn't really paying attention and only seemed to want to get me into a luxury/sports car even after telling her about 3 times that I needed a pickup truck.

Desventajas: The rental agent did not take my drivers license information correctly (even after giving it to 2 staff members) so I received a call after driving for about 30 minutes that I needed to return to another enterprise location and provide my license. The service was poor and that was an unrealistic request, especially on thanksgiving day.
When I arrived to drop off my car the following day the location in Norwich, CT could not provide me with a receipt or any other proof I had returned the car because my pick up location was “on a different computer program.”

This appeared to be due to Advantage not having appropriate signage and labels indicating where customers should go.
Advantage did not have an illuminated sign like all the other rental places had along the entry ramp into the parking garage. Because of this, I drove all around looking for where it was located and I ended up on the 3rd floor instead of the 2nd (where Advantage was) and had to ask an employee of a different rental place where it was. He said this happens to people A LOT and told me I would need to find the gate person and tell her what happened so she could let me out. I got stuck waiting in a massive line of cars paying to exit for nearly a half hour and had to convince the lady what had happened and to please let me out. By the time I got out and had to loop all the way around, find the correct Advantage return area, and get the car checked it was 12, an hour past the 11pm due time. Because of this, I was charged an extra $35.98 as a late fee.
Also, the rental agreement says all charges are based on a 24 hour rental day which is misleading because technically my two day rental should have ended at 12 not 11pm.
I see on Yelp advantage has just 1.5 stars which is not a competitive rating at all. Instead of writing another nasty comment to compound the poor rating, I am reaching out directly to see if the situation can be rectified here. I believe that due to lack of Advantage location signs around the (very confusing) Logan airport, as well as a misleading rental agreement, it is very fair to refund me the penalty fee of $35.98. This is definitely the way to establish rapport with your customers and get better reviews.

The "choose your own vehicle" was FANTASTIC—so convenient (plus, you get to find a make/model/color that you actually enjoy driving)!. Desventajas: Dropoff was confusing and some of the employees were rude/unhelpful (the woman actually checking me out was wonderful, however). Pretty pricey compared to comparable vehicles at other rental firms. I only went with Hertz because other companies were totally sold out.

The car selected was spotlessly clean and had a nice comfortable interior with USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple integration, etc...Desventajas: Only one or two full size cars, the rest SUVs.
The SUV I selected needed some break service. When decelerating from highway speeds it vibrated a little bit. It was not noticeable driving in congested city traffic in Boston, but it becomes prominent on the highway.

When I returned it they gave me a bill for over $600 and refused to reimburse me after showing them the Kayak confirmation email. After speaking to the national rep they only remebursed me $100

The drop off instructions are not clear - BOS car rental drop off is not clearly marked with Payless. It's also the only one where you leave the keys in the car, write down your own information (mileage, fuel etc) and then have to go back inside to the pick up counter and wait. Again. For another clerk who is not efficient. I knew what I was paying for. This eval was meant to help the company realize they are not customer friendly.

Nastiest counter person ever!Desventajas: The check-in process took forever. There is only one bitchy person working the counter with a serious attitude problem. If you hate life and you hate people, please do not have a customer service job. The other car rental companies had many employees working.
Returning the car, there was no one in the booth and there is a sign saying that we had to go back inside and wait in line again to return the car. The other companies all had attendants to check the car back in. We stood in line for 20 minutes while it was nearing the deadline to return the car. Thankfully, the people in line let us cut in order to register our car returned on time so we would be penalized. They really need to get a better system. It doesn't need to be so painful. Next time, I'll pay more because my time is worth it.
Desventajas: The people at the Payless desk are just weird. Unfriendly and really odd ducks. The wait was a bit long, as there's only one person working the desk. There's no one working the dropoff, so you have to wait in the pickup line again to return your car. The first car we got into stunk like cigarettes so we waited again to get a new one. The second car made a strange noise and was scratched up but we just took it rather than wait again.
Ventajas: no line in pickup. very nice service. i was able to switch to the sized car i like.Desventajas: no agent at drop off. need to go to counter place to check out.
Worst Car Rental Experience EVER!!!! Do not rent from paylessDesventajas: Terrible desk service. No one to check the car back in. Had to wait in the line for people who were starting their rentals. Even if Payless is 50% cheaper......I will never rent from them again.
Desventajas: Car was not that clean with gum stickers on the outside.
Rental Car Disaster Ventajas: N/ADesventajas: My flight arrived to Boston Logan at 1100 PM after several delays. There was no one available at the Payless rental counter and no option and/or method to pick up the car.
Ventajas: The rental was cheaper than the competitors Desventajas: We had to make a new reservation when we got to the counter in order to pay with a credit card that had a different name than the original reservation, the staff at the counter gave us the wrong directions to get to our car, the car was dirty when we finally found it,
Payless now part of AvisVentajas: Computers were down at airport terminal when we picked up but an Avis rep was helping at the pickup kioskDesventajas: Had to wait in line to drop off car.

We followed the signs from the interstate and when we arrived to where it said rental car return, we were on the wrong side of the building for Payless. They should give which lot belongs to which company on the signs.
Boston Pick upDesventajas: car selection wasn't great, car we ended up using smelled like marijuana, which we took over the car that smelled like cat pee. The guy at the counter was a real jag
OverchargedVentajas: Good choice of carsDesventajas: The cars were very very dirty, to the extent that we had to open each and every car and pick the cleanest one which wasn't even "clean" but it was the least dirty of the lot.
I don't just mean dirty as in dust, but as in there was snow stains all over the steering as if someone had smeared them on. The rear window was dirty as well. The windshield was so dirty that i had to pull over at a gas satiation and clean the windshield from the inside using wet paper towels.
This wasn't even the worst part. We returned the car on time and still we got charged late fee. Needless to say, never Thrifty again.
Efficient handling of incident reportVentajas: I was in an accident which damaged the rental car (didn't hurt anyone!). It was easy to report the damage to Thrifty. I called them, and knew that I had to fill out an incident form and provide it when I dropped off the car.
Ventajas: Our pick up process was smooth and easy in Boston’s new car rental center. Desventajas: The fees for E-Zpass are outrageously high, as are the costs of adding a driver.

Not for localDesventajas: Made a reservation and when was time to pic up the rental they don't rent for locals. Left me without a car on the middle of the night with 6 other person to rent on the counter of another company that charged me triple. They should not allow reservation if they not intend to rent
Desventajas: The employee assisting me was very friendly until I asked about a $40 insurance “waiver” fee, which was summarily refunded, at which point he became completely dismissive. It is unfair to have a “waiver” fee, IMO, since the whole point of the insurance waiver is that one DOESN’T want the insurance to begin with! Probably wouldn’t use this company again.

It was OK...Ventajas: When we returned the car, we were offered a ride to our terminal and did not have to wait for the bus. Desventajas: Not a great selection of cars in the size we rented. Plus the car we got had some back tire issues. They need to drive the cars to make sure all is fine with them before they are released for rental.
Ventajas: Easy pickup and return. Great that ezpass rental was available with the car
Desventajas: Drop off for car was mid-town in Boston. There was no one there to receive car/keys/paperwork.
