In November 1962, Washington Dulles Airport, now called Dulles International Airport (IAD), opened as a major hub for air connections between the east coast and the west coast. Today the airport handles flights for thirty-one airlines (Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Continental, Delta, jetBlue, Southwest, United, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and more) and sees an average of 27 million travelers every year.
Dulles International Airport, located in Dulles, Virginia, is approximately thirty miles from the center of Washington D.C. What impresses many airline passengers is that the airport's 11,830 acres is spread out over two counties. So while a plane might land in Fairfax County, most of the terminals and concourses are in Loudoun County.
Within Dulles International Airport, there is one main terminal (128 gates) and five concourses (A, B, C, D, Z). Passengers are shuttled to the concourse they need by mobile lounges and "plane mates." The mobile lounge fits approximately 100 passengers, while the smaller "plane mates," referred to as Gate B or Gate H, make it possible for passengers to board the plane straight from their 15-foot high shuttle. Those flying to or from Concourse B have the option of using the new walkway that has moving sidewalks to make travel easy.
Main Terminal, Gates B &H, and Concourse Z
The main terminal is where all passengers purchase tickets if necessary, check-in, pass through security screenings, book rental cars or hotels, or arrange for ground transportation when needed. Outgoing passengers proceed up a level to the back of the baggage claim area in order to travel to the correct concourse needed for their flight. Behind baggage claim, there is the mobile lounge dock that takes the traveler to concourse A and D. Moving sidewalks bring passengers to concourse B. Security rules do not allow the family of passengers to go beyond the security gate, so people will need to say goodbye to outgoing passengers at the security terminals in the ticketing area.
Concourse Z is to the west of the mobile lounge dock which sits behind the main terminal. US Airways and US Airways Express flights leave Concourse Z.
Two planemates (Gate B and Gate H) are to the east of the mobile lounge. These smaller gates are actually the "planemates" that take passengers directly to their flight. The planemates are on scissor lifts that allow the moving compartment to rise to the plane's doorway so that passengers board the plane directly from the planemate. These gates serve Lloyd Aereo Boliviano, Saudi Arabian Airlines, and TACA.
Concourse A & Concourse B
Concourse A and Concourse B sit side by side behind the main terminal. Concourse A is a smaller concourse that serves some United flights and United Express. Passengers pass through security in the main terminal before accessing the mobile lounges that take them to Concourse A. A number of smaller airlines operate the United Express flights. These smaller airlines include Chautauqua Airlines, Colgan Air, GoJet, Mesa Airlines, and Trans State Airlines. Located behind Concourse Z, an airport mobile lounges are required to get passengers to Concourse A.
Concourse B sits to the right of Concourse A. Airlines that are served by Concourse B include Aer Lingus (starting in August 2007), Aeroflot, AirTran Airways (Atlanta or Orlando only), Air France, All Nippon, Continental, Continental Express, Copa Airlines (starting in July 2007), Delta Airlines, Delta Connection, Iberia Airlines, JetBlue, KLM, Lufthansa, Korean Air, MAXjet, Northwest Airlines, Northwest Airlink, Qatar Airways, SAS, South African Airways, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic. Passengers can now use the covered walkway with moving sidewalks to travel to Concourse B.
Concourse C & Concourse D
Concourse C is located behind Concourse A and requires passengers to board a mobile lounge in order to reach the concourse. Passengers board the mobile lounge after passing through security in the main terminal. Concourse C serves Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz, United Airlines, TED, and United Express.
Concourse D, strictly for international flights, sits to the right of Concourse C, and mobile lounges are the means for passengers to reach the concourse. Concourse D serves American Airlines, American Connection, American Eagle, Austrian Airlines, British Airway, Ethiopian Airlines, and United Airlines.
