The Raleigh-Durham International Airport is a regional hub that processes about ten million passengers a year. Up until 2000, Midway was the main carrier at the airport. After its bankruptcy in 2001, American Airlines has become the airline with the most services to Raleigh Durham. However, the airport also offers domestic flights on AirTran, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, Midwest, Northwest, Southwest, United and US Airways. A few international destinations are accessible via Air Canada (Toronto), American (London-Gatwick), and charter airlines (Cancun, Nassau and other Caribbean hotspots).
The airport is conveniently located to be accessible to all parts of the Research Triangle. It is 7 miles from Research Triangle Park, and 10 miles to the downtown of either Raleigh or Durham. It may also be a good choice of airport for visitors to southern Virginia or to Greensboro and Winston-Salem.
While you are waiting for your flight, feel free to take advantage of the airport's chapel, with its chaplain on-call 24 hours a day. There is also plenty of artwork around the airport; as you drive in, there is the Triangle Icon, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Wrights brothers' first flight. Around the terminal, you will also see rotating and permanent exhibits of paintings and murals by local artists.
Terminal A
This terminal, known as the Blue Box, serves Northwest Airlines, Continental Airlines, AirTran Airways, JetBlue Airways, ExpressJet Airlines, Delta Air Lines, US Airways and Southwest Airlines. In the late 1990s, Terminal B was merged into Terminal A, and the new terminal A was expanded. As a result, there are a few quirks here: the first gate is A5 (there is no A1-4), and Gates A10 and 13 have no jet bridges, and are therefore unusable.
Terminal C
Terminal C, known as Red Roof, was built in 1987 for American Airlines, which still services the majority of the gates. Air Canada, Charter Express and Midwest have one gate each, while United has the last two along the corridor. Gates 1-13 are under renovation.
