Sitting on 2,000 acres of land a little more than ten miles south of downtown Knoxville, Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport handles both passenger flights and serves as the home base for the Air National Guard's 134th Refueling Group. With a little less than two million passengers using the airport every year, the airport offers some nice touches without being overwhelming to navigate.
In 2000, the airport underwent renovations to improve check-in, baggage claims, and security checks. Bathrooms are new, a couple of stores offer necessities, groceries, books, newspapers, and magazines. The very first airport Ruby Tuesday is also located in the terminal. There are also plans to put in an art display to help keep guests busy during lengthy layovers or delays. For now, there are no airline lounges, current rules with the airport authority prohibit them. Finally, smokers will find that smoking is not tolerated in the airport terminal or in areas where the public is frequently found. Most smokers have to go to the parking garages or away from the terminal entrances.
The airport consists of the two-level terminal that houses twelve gates on the upper level. The main terminal is also connected to the neighboring Hilton Airport Hotel thanks to a covered walkway. More than 120 flights use the Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport every day. There are ten airlines who serve the airport and connect to fifteen larger hubs ensuring passengers can easily reach their destination.
Directions
Reaching Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport is easy. Those heading to Knoxville will find traveling the I-40 is the best route. Follow the I-140 to the 129 South and follow airport signs. Finally, from the south or southeast, drivers will take Highway 321 or Highway 411 towards Maryville. Within Maryville, drivers will use Highway 129 North and travel a little more than three miles and follow airport turn-offs.
Main Terminal
Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport consists of the main terminal that covers two levels. The Lower Level is connected to the Short-Term Parking via a covered walkway. Car rental counters are just past the main entrance and then a number of services, including first aid, security, information, and rest rooms are on this level. Escalators and elevators take passengers to the second floor for check-in, security, and the twelve gates.
Upstairs, passengers must go down the stairs outside just across from the Upper Roadway to reach Short-Term Parking via a covered walkway. The main portion of the terminal is rectangular in shape, but a short hallway, just past security checkpoints, brings passengers to the concourse where all of the gates and waiting areas are located. Passengers will find a post office, Ruby Tuesday, restrooms, Check-In, and pay phones in this area.
Gates 1 through 12 serve a number of airlines. Delta Airlines flies to and from Gates 1, 3, and 5. Allegiant Air uses Gate 2. Gate 4 is for those flying on American Airlines. Gate 7 is for all United Airlines flights. Gates 8 and 10 serve US Airways. Gates 9 and 11 handle all Continental Airlines flights. Finally, Gate 12 handles all Northwest Airlines flights. For now, the airport does not have any flights scheduled for Gate 6, but as flights or airlines are added, this may change.
