Covering more than 35 square miles, Utrecht is the capital city of the Utrecht province in the Netherlands. As the capital city, Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands and is home to the country's largest university. In addition to having many historic buildings, friendly locals, and exceptional shops and restaurants, the canal system within Utrecht is raved about. Some of the former canals have been filled in and turned into an immensely popular shopping plaza, but there are still some canals where tourists can enjoy the views and perhaps take a boat tour through the city. Additionally, Utrecht is one of the only cities in the Netherlands that has a prominent skyline with the Dom Tower of Utrecht reaching towards the clouds. In 2007, a number of other tall buildings will be completed creating even more depth to the skyline.
