Darwin's tropical climate, proximity to Asia and large immigrant population give it a feel that is more similar to Asian cities than to those of southern Australian like Sydney or Melbourne. Its had a turbulent history, bombarded during WW2 and then nearly wiped out by the biggest cyclone to have ever hit Australian soil in 1974, yet the city has sprung back to life and now boasts a pumping tourism industry and a party-town reputation.
